ACADEMY

For the evenings
you want to know exactly.

Four books, 19 chapters. No course, no homework. You read at your own pace and set a bookmark where you stop.

An open book on a wooden reading stand by candlelight, a thin ribbon marking the page

WHY

Because “that is how it is written”
is not an answer.

At some point you want to know why the card means that and not something else. Who put the twenty-two Major Arcana into this order, and when. Why there are twelve signs and not thirteen.

The Academy answers that as history, not as a correction. It takes the subject seriously, and the people who made it as well.

AN EXAMPLE

For three hundred and fifty years
tarot was a game.

At the Milanese court the first cards were painted by hand and laid with gold leaf. In the middle of the fifteenth century people played with them, fortune telling was not part of it for a long time. That a language grew out of it we owe to a handful of people between 1781 and 1909.

That is how it reads: with names, dates and the wonder at how unlikely all of it was. A chapter takes a few minutes.
